constituent island, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca. Penang is the second smallest Malaysian state in area after Perlis, and the eighth most
populous. It is composed of two parts – Penang Island, where the seat of government is, and Seberang Perai(formerly, and occasionally Province Wellesley) on the Malay Peninsula.
THE KEK LOK SI TEMPLE
This is aBuddhist temple situated in Air Itam in Penang and is one of the best known temples on the island. It is the
largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. The temple is heavily commercialised with shops at every level and inside the main
temple complexes. The construction of the temple began in 1890 and was inspired
by the chief monk of theGoddess of Mercy Temple at Pitt Street. As the fairly recent date mentioned
above may suggest, the temple is still growing. Generous donations from the
affluent Chinese community allow the construction of additional buildings. From
2005 to 2009 an ornate shelter for the Kuan Yin statue was constructed. 16
carved dragon pillars were built, carrying the top of three concentric
octogonals roof. This most recent construction was inaugurated on 6 December
2009.
PENANG HILL FUNICULAR RAILWAY
Lying at the NE tip of the island, it is the seat
of administration and is also the commercial hub of the state. This bustling
metropolitan city combines the best of east and west as seen in its fascinating
collection of fine old buildings, each bearing the stamp of different foreign
influences in its colorful history.
Penang's
charm also lies in its famous golden beached and calm warm seas. Penang today
is a resort island in full bloom - an idyllic playground for worshippers of the
sun and the sea. Its multi-racial population contributes to a wealth of
cultural attractions and festivals.
The Snake Temple is located at Sungai Kluang near Bayan Lepas airport in the Penang Island. In front of the Snake Temple is a big incense burner, where they burn large incense.Inside the temple, in the Main Prayer Hall, is filled with the smoke of burning incense. Some people say that the snakes get paralysed by the incense.
